Many of my hobbies tend to be about things
which are also my job! Guess that makes me pretty lucky and it sure
adds a lot of fun to my work. Technical things have been of interest
to me for as long as I can remember. Chemistry sets, erector sets,
junior scientist things, ham radio,
flying, and just about any new technology that has come along. I just really like gadgets. One of the hobbies that
I used to spend a lot of time on, but unfortunately have had to
move on from, is flying small planes. I was recently interviewed
by Nick Nash, one of our summer interns here in Somers, about my
interest in flying. You can read a transcript of our conversation here. I sold my Cessna 172 in the early '80's but have replaced
that part of my life with motorcycling.
I also like to tinker around in the basement. I used to repair radios
and TV's when I was a teenager. Now I fix things around the house.
I like to build things too. I am hardly a cabinet maker but I like
to work with wood. One of my projects was to build a recycling center.
People kid me about it.

I came up with a technique for attaching
twine to the inside of the container in such a way that when the
container is full of cardboard you can release the twine, tie
it up tightly, and lift the bundle out intact to take to the city
recycling center. I did a patent search and found nothing like it but when I found the cost to file
I decided to think about something else!
I have to admit I spend
a great deal of my time using computers and on the Internet. You
can see what computer hardware and software I use if you are interested. My latest technical interests are
MP3 and Linux. The Global Positioning System is another area I find really fascinating. For Christmas a few
years ago, some friends gave me a Garmin GPS 40. That got me started.
There is a great deal of interesting information on GPS on the Net. I have included GPS coordinates
of the places I have visited recently on my Travel page.
A major area of interest to me is music. I have a music section
in my Favorite Places but also have a dedicated Music page with some of my own music.
I also like to read books although I do not consider myself
an avid reader.
The hobby that helps me stay in shape (well at least compared to not doing it) is running. Last but not least hobby
is motorcycling.
