WiFi - Update No. 7

I have been writing quite a bit about WiFi -- as you know. It is clearly on my list of "the next big things". Recently I spent some time talking with Matthew Miller, Special Projects Editor at EDN and CommVerge which is part of the Reed Electronics Group. The title of Michael's story is "Wave propagation" and you can find it here. He did a very nice job in covering a complex area and asked me a lot of focused questions. I can tell from the story that he not only wrote a very clear story but he also did his homework and fact checking. I have been on a trip for last couple of weeks and I'll be sharing more about that soon. I also have some more WiFi updates coming soon.

Truck Stop WiFi

Three million truckers in America will now have wireless Internet access at 1,000 Truck Stops. In a press release earlier this week, IBM and Rocksteady Networks announced that the companies will provide the infrastructure for Columbia Advanced Wireless (CAW) to enable broadband wireless Internet access at truck stops throughout the country. The Rocksteady software will run on IBM's Intel-based servers running Linux. CAW said they chose IBM and Linux because they required virtually 100% uptime, and since they don't maintain an IT staff at the truck stops. (read more)

Discover the visionary behind Big Blue

I am at PC Forum sitting next to Kevin Maney from USA Today. Kevin has a new book coming out next month called "The Maverick And His Machine". The book is a biography of Thomas Watson, Sr. and explores what was behind the making of IBM. It is being promoted as a way to "discover the visionary behind Big Blue". Knowing Kevin, and what an excellent writer he is, I suspect this is going to be a really good book. You can pre-order it here.

PC Forum

I am just now back in the country and will get to Scottsdale for PC Forum later this afternoon. PC Forum is an important conference -- great way to stay in touch with many friends in the industry and stay abreast of the latest thinking by many industry leaders. I'll have more to say about where I have been and about PC Forum later in the week.

Smart Mobs

Smart Mobs by Howard Rheingold is a really good book -- just added it to my books list. Howard did a wonderful job of painting a vision for the future based on what is happening with WiFi and other disruptive technologies. He interviewed many visionaries and practitioners and then incorporated their thoughts into the book in a very nicely integrated way. I highly recommend this book.

Saving Time At aa.com

I went to aa.com last night to check in and print out a boarding pass for a flight I am taking this morning. This offered the potential for non-trivial time saving. It took 45 minutes on the phone with the help desk to get it done! The travel agent had entered INF somewhere in the record to signiffy that there was additional information. American Airlines took INF to mean "infant" and they don't allow you to print a boarding pass for an infant. So much for time saving. Airline web sites have come a long way but they have a much longer way to go.

Vortex

VORTEX 2003: The New Leaders is coming up May 18-20 at The Ritz-Carlton in Laguna Niguel Dana Point, California. I find conferences like this to be an excellent chance to connect with the people, markets, and technologies that are leading the next wave of growth in the information technology industry. Over the years I have gotten to know quite a few revolutionary thinkers, investors, researchers, and consultants who play a key role in the future of the technology business. The agenda for this year's Vortex conference is of particular interest to me because of what is going on with WiFi -- and I'll be speaking about it at the conference. There promises to be some other hot topics too. (read more)

Word Bursts

Six months ago I said I would write about blogging as a topic -- to try to capture my thoughts about how profound and important blogging is. There has been so much written by so many thoughtful people that it would be hard to offer new ideas about it and frankly, I have been putting off the task. Yesterday I got an email from Irving Wladawsky-Berger, my friend and former boss at IBM, about Word Bursts. Irving's note motivated me to get going and put my thoughts down -- time to blog about blogging. (read more)
