End Of Summer: Cache Found

is definitely habit forming. The first hike to find the
Tobyhanna Lake Trail Cache ended in failure as previously
described. It would have been easier to just forget about it, but that was
not to be. Knowing that others had found the cache made me feel I should be
able to find it too. It took a second hike but we found it today. (read

It was roughly 1.5 miles from the parking area to the point where the GPS receiver was telling me that the waypoint was ninety degrees to my right and 300+ feet into the woods. It was very familiar since I had spent quite a bit of time looking there before. This time it took two of us just fifteen minutes to find the cache -- it is well placed. (The picture of the contents was not taken at the actual location of the cache -- I didn't want to spoil things for other geocachers by making it too easy to identify the exact spot. There were quite a few things in the military ammunition case as you can see in the picture. Some of them were in a zip-lock bag. The zipper was out of place and the open bag was getting condensation in it. I was glad I was able to fix it. There was nothing I wanted to take from the cache but I left a New York MTA MetroCard. It has at least several subway trips left on it and is good until 12/03. I hope someone is able to use it.
Part of the success may have come from using the Magellan SporTrak Color GPS receiver. It is newer than the Garmin that I used on the last hike and I believe it is more accurate. It also seems to update position info much more often. This is important when moving very slowly in the woods. The "accuracy" of the GPS is a highly complex topic. I intend to study that subject a lot more about that and will share what I learn here in the hiking category of the weblog.
